Wahluke Slope Appellation - established 2006

Fox Estate Winery, Wahluke Slope

About Wahluke Slope
The Wahluke Slope appellation was authorized
as an official Washington State appellation in 2006. North of the Yakima
Valley, it is one of the state's warmest growing regions, and 5,200
acres are planted to a variety of wine grapes, producing about 20 percent
of the entire harvest each year for the Washington wine industry.
The Columbia River drifts lazily through the gap in the Saddle Mountains
and curves to form Wahluke Slope's southern boundary. It is the only
appellation in the Pacific Northwest that is a single geological landform.
The region is a giant alluvial fan created by repetitive flooding events.
- Naturally bounded by the Columbia River to
the west and south, by the Saddle Mountains on the north, and on the
east by the Hanford Reach National Monument.
- The Wahluke Slope AVA lies entirely within
the established Columbia Valley appellation and is home to more than
20 vineyards, one winery and two wine production facilities.
- The 81,000 acre region features approximately
5,200 acres of vineyards (nearly twenty percent of the total wine grape
acreage in the state).
- Top grape varieties: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc.
- Wahluke Slope has one of the driest, warmest
climates in the state allowing complete control of vine vigor and ripening
through irrigation.
