Yakima Valley
About Yakima Valley The Yakima valley is 80 miles long and home to more than 40 wineries. This region was established as the first federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA) in Washington in 1983. Bordered on the south by Horse Heaven Hills and on the north by the Ahtanum Ridge and Rattlesnake Hills, the Yakima valley has an average growing season of 190 days with an annual precipitation of approximately 8 inches. Known as a prime agricultural region, over 10,000 acres of wine grapes are planted. As you drive through the valley you will also find other crops such as apples, cherries, asparagus, hops, alfalfa and onions. Most of the wineries are open to the public for complimentary wine tastings.
